Intel Corp. extended its top-of-the-line
Xeon processor family Tuesday yesterday
with a 450-MHz version of the chip.
Volume pricing for the chip will range
from $824 to $3,692 depending on how
large a cache comes included with the
processor. The caches -- high-speed
memory components that help improve
processor performance -- range in size
from 512KB to 2 megabytes. The
processors are designed specifically for
use in high-end workstations and servers
that have traditionally been the domain of
companies like Sun Microsystems Inc.
and IBM.
