CDMA / PCS Power Output, by Regulation

If I remember correctly during the years when the FCC was setting up to auction the PCS spectrum, the regulations that were to govern the tower output level (ERP) dictated a much lower power level than the original cellular (TDMA) existing at that time. I think the maximum power was a factor of ten lower than the "cellular".

In a simple analysis, the radiative power falls as the square of the distance from the tower (spreads on a spherical surface). So, for a given signal level, the PCS would cover only (roughly) 1/3 the area. Since circles (coverage areas of each PCS tower) do not fit neatly together, you would need three times as many towers to get the same signal strength.

Also, I believe there was some regulation about PCS tower height restriction versus "cellular".

The regulations may have changed. Also, anyone feel free to correct my simple math.
