China clinical tests of Viagra a hit
Wednesday January 6, 1:41 am Eastern Time

SHENZHEN, China, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Nearly 600 Chinese
men are eagerly taking Viagra in clinical trials as health
authorities evaluate the anti-impotence drug for import, the
Shenzhen Economic Daily said on Wednesday.

Calls for patients to volunteer for the tests received an
enthusiastic response, with some pleading that it ''affected my family life and personal happiness,'' the newspaper quoted a Beijing doctor as saying.

Trials were limited to married men above the age of 22 with at least a six-month history of erectile disfunction, said Beijing Medical University doctor Xue Zhaoying.

The trials at seven hospitals around China began in October last year and would be complete by April or May, the newspaper said.

Goverment authorities would decide whether to clear the drug for import before the end of the year, it said.

The diamond-shaped blue pill manufactured by U.S. drug firm Pfizer Inc is already trickling into China via smugglers.

Touts can be seen on South China street corners passing out flyers advertising the drug locally dubbed ''weige,'' or ''great man.''
