David,
I'm using DJIA for RS because it's easier to scan a DWA portfolio than to individually calculating RS using the S&P500. As you know I favor using the S&P500 and do so with individual holdings. But with 500 stocks to follow, it's easier to scan.
When the market moves up strongly, the BRL goes first.
When the market is going sideways, RS is usually the first signal.

BTW, I found an OIL index on Yahoo - ^IPCI. I haven't figured out how to get its historical data yet.
