Hi Lynn, RBOC is 'regional Bell operating company', your local provider. 23 miles is way too far for ADSL. I read a previous post from you that also said the cable company will never run lines your way. That's really too bad, it looks like the only option you will have in the near future for high speed access is satellite, which at the present time still requires a phone link to send requests FROM your house. I had checked out DIRECPC (www.direcpc.com) at one time, they are still pretty expensive but getting less so. You can get a combo dish that will work for both TV and internet. The other interesting thing I read about last year is that AT&T was working on a wireless technology to provide homeowners local and long distance service, as well as data. It would work via a box attached to your house and communicate over an AT&T built network. It would be T's way of bypassing the RBOC's to sell local phone service. If this comes to fruition, it could be a viable option. I have not heard anything about it lately, maybe they are perfecting it in the labs, or maybe all the money they are now putting into cable via TCI has caused a strategy change. I'll let you know if I hear more...

John
