Newstraders - January 06, 1999 10:39
(NewsTraders.com)-- Shares of General Motors Hughes (GMH) rocketed Tuesday after rumors surfaced that the satellite broadcaster's DirecTV unit is in talks to acquire No. 2 PrimeStar Inc., according to Variety.

Highlights:

- DirecTV would add 2.3 million subscribers if it were to purchase PrimeStar, which would assert its dominance as the nation's No. 1 satellite television provider with 6.6 million customers.

- Rumors of a deal were reinforced when Merrill Lynch analyst Tom Watts upgraded GMH to a "buy" rating Tuesday. He cited consolidation in the industry as one reason for his rosy outlook.

- Valuation for Primestar would likely be around $2 billion.

- Primestar is controlled by a handful of cable players, led by giants Time Warner (TWX) and Tele-Communications Inc. (TCOMA).
