Newbridge Wins Multimillion Dollar
ATM Switch Contract with ACSI

ACSI to Provide Coast-to-Coast High-Speed Data Network Featuring ATM, Frame
Relay and Internet Access via Newbridge 36170 MainStreet ATMnet Switch

Herndon, VA, July 11, 1996 -- Newbridge Networks announced today a multimillion
dollar agreement to provide its 36170 MainStreet ATMnet Backbone Switch to American
Communications Services, Inc. (ACSI), a competitive local exchange carrier.

ACSI will deploy the Newbridge 36170 MainStreet ATMnet switch throughout its key
markets, primarily in the Southern United States, to create a high-speed data network
delivering state-of-the-art asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and frame relay technology,
and to meet current and future business demand for broadband data services.

"We believe ACSI is the first competitive local exchange carrier to offer coast-to-coast ATM
services in the United States using a Newbridge multiservices platform for frame relay and
ATM, and are delighted to provide the backbone switching equipment for their network,"
said Mike Pascoe, President, Newbridge Networks Inc. "The new network will support the
gamut of business data applications, including Internet access and interactive multimedia, and
will redefine the way customers think about competitive local telecommunications, a
marketplace where data is becoming as important as voice. "

"ACSI's coast-to-coast broadband network is designed to meet demand for high-speed data
applications, and to alleviate problems with existing networks that were never designed to
handle high bandwidth data," said Michael Mansouri, Executive Vice President of ACSI's
Advanced Data Services business unit. "Through ACSI's local access facilities, customers will
be able to easily switch from their current low-speed services to a broadband network that
offers improved quality, reduced costs -- and the ability to deliver high-speed applications in
a cost-effective manner."

ACSI currently offers a wide range of data applications such as local area network (LAN)
and wide area network (WAN) interconnectivity via frame relay and Internet Protocol (IP),
Internet access for Internet providers, broadband multimedia transmission and managed
network services. ASCI has established peering and network access agreements for Internet
traffic, and is pursuing network-to-network interfaces (NNIs) with the major long distance
companies providing IP/Internet, frame relay and ATM services.

ACSI already has deployed Newbridge 36170 MainStreet ATMnet switches in Greenville
and Columbia, South Carolina. The company will have 25 points of presence (POPs), mostly
in markets where ACSI has fiber optic networks, operating by August, and a total of 40
POPs operating by the end of 1996. ACSI will manage the data network using the
Newbridge 46020 MainStreet Network Manager, which provides single-point management
for monitoring, fault-finding, network configuration as well as for accessing billing and other
information.

ACSI, a competitive local exchange carrier based in Annapolis Junction, Maryland, offers
local telecommunications services and data network solutions to business and government
customers principally in mid-sized markets in the South and Southwest United States. ACSI
currently has 24 local fiber-optic networks in service or under construction. The company
expects to have 30 networks in service or under construction by September 30, 1996 and a
total of 50 networks in service or under construction by mid-1998.
