My ISP has some nice info on DSL service in the Seattle area, see www.nwnexus.com (DSL Services in left nav bar). This information includes charts of which Puget Sound switches are DSL ready (basically all of them, up from 1/3 6 months ago), carrier pricing options from US West and GTE ... here's GTE's: Bronze 256k/64k $ 40 Silver 384k/384K $ 60 Gold 768k/768k $ 80 Platinum 1.5 Mb/768k $120 This ISP has ramped up their DSL offering in about 3 months - ISDN took about a year to come online from first whisper. Their service people are very familiar with the telco's behavior around installation ... there has been no confusion, distortion, or screwups so far in my process to have 768k/768k installed on Jan 19. Lots of good info on real-life DSL there. GTE is running a installation promotion. $99 one time fee for all installation work (CO + premise) + modem (one year commitment) ... no modem rental fees. We are getting the same level of service from the same ISP for our business across town and my partner and I are already planning major improvements in our "distributed collaboration technology". I've been a DSL fan for quite a while and it's my impression from the media, and my own experience, that the DSL rollout will be quicker than might be generally expected. Both approaches are very interesting (I'm long ATHM and T).
