The ONE YEAR loss % was 33%, so it would take about eight years to lose 96% of your money. However, keep in mind that a number of stocks did the double thing before tanking. I will someday present loss rates for various strategies other than buy and hold.
Now, the 49% blackjack odds are for a SINGLE HAND. Even the slowest of dealers can probably do 50 hands or more an hour. If you play continuously, you will lose EVERYTHING in a game with a .49 success probability (unless of course you card count and/or follow a playing system perfectly)...a Ruskie name Tchebychev proved it. I'll try and give you an estimate of how many trials it takes on average for 99% of your money to be lost at BJ(without a playing system). I can tell you this, after 10,000 hands, ON AVERAGE, you will have won 4900 and lost 5100 and if you had enough money to take a loss on 200 hands, guess what? You would be wiped out. And 10,000 hands don't take but 200 total hours of playing, at most
In other words, it ain't that the pennies are great, it's just that each "hand" takes a lot longer than a blackjack hand.
