Michael:

There was (or maybe still is) a British company called Tadpole that for several years made SPARC laptops that ran Solaris. I don't know if they went broke or just stopped making the product. I think they switched over to making some other kind of laptop.

Personally, I don't think there's enough of a market for that product for Sun to make any money out of it. There may be some people who need it, but I doubt the number would support a profitable business. Unix is overkill for a laptop. If anything, I think we're getting to the point where Windows 98 is overkill for a laptop.

There's this really great current two-page ad by HP that says on the left page: Here's what a laptop can do:, and then has this long list of things like editing audio files and searching databases, etc. Then on the right page, it says And here's what YOU want to do with a laptop:, and then it says "browse the web and check your e-mail". The right page shows a picture of this little tiny sub-sub-notebook thing that's bigger than a palmtop but smaller than a regular sub-notebook.

I think that about sums it up.

Regards,
