NBN Insight: Charting the markets performance
WebPosted Wed Jan 6 20:35:04 1999
TORONTO - The stock market seems to be going through the roof but the big question is: will the trend continue?

One way to answer that question is by technical analysis - looking at the charts and graphs of a market's performance and figuring out where it's headed.

Ron Meisels of P&C Holdings says the graph for the Dow Jones shows that, while there were serious correction in August and October, over all the graph shows that the Dow is forging a gradual path upwards.

A marker called the "40-week moving average" has never turned down for the New York exchange.

The TSE on the other hand, has not fared as well. It experienced a more severe correction this year and the recovery has not put at the level of the Dow, which is experiencing all-time highs.

Meisels attributes the weaker performance to events over the last half of '98, like the collapse of the bank mergers interfering with the normal behaviour of the market.

Meisels has these recommendations for stocks that look like they will do well in 1999:

Bombardier
Loblaw
Newbridge
