As a precursor, no doubt, to Y2K problems, EE-Times hasn't updated their search engine to allow searches of 1999 news. But I did find a couple articles of interest:

This one is from back in October, but I must have missed it. It is basically about the competition in PCs in China. We should note that the technique that the US used to develop its industry back in the good old days was high tariffs on imported goods. We can expect our trading partners to use some of the same techniques, particularly in industries that are not guarded by difficult technological barriers...
