Here's a tid bit sent to me about Ascend problems at an ISP.

Subject: 1/24/97 Weekend Announcements

"E-MAIL & CONNECTION PROBLEMS:
Some of our customers have been experiencing difficulties with their E-mail
and/or their connections. We have discovered there are actually three
problems, which we have isolated. These problems and our reactions to them
are as follows:

1. The SMTP mail server is not able to determine the size of the message
being sent because the ASCEND (this is Erol's digital modem that allows the
dial-up to connect to our server) connection between the dial-up and our
server is not determining the correct pipeline size, thus the correct amount
of data is not allowed to flow between the dial-up and our server. We have
initiated a short term fix for the SMTP issue, we have turned off some
performance features on our servers in order to work around the ASCEND problem.

2. There has also been a latency issue which means the modem is stopping
for ten to fifteen seconds and in many cases it is then dropping the
connection. This is due to the ASCEND being unable to correctly coordinate
the connection between the dial-up and our server. We are planning to add a
compatable code release in order to attain more stability. However, this
will temporarily eliminate 33.6 connection until ASCEND fixes the problem
with the 33.6 code release.

3. We know the problems with the Columbia POP site are related to the
above two issues, however, we cannot determine the exact problem with the
Columbia ASCENDS until the first two situations have been fixed. We
apologize to our Columbia customers for this inconvenience. We are working
with ASCEND to resolve these issues. "
