Your analysis is very thorough. And for the most part it looks like a good assessment of what is going on. My question is: despite the intense competition from Cisco,Shiva,3Com, et al -- isn't true that Ascend has such a stronghold on major ISPs that it will take more than just competitive products to displace Ascend?

That is, factoring growth rate and the certain wins that the competition will get, will the competion actually win enough of the key accounts to displace Ascend and thus, to slow their growth?

My guess is that Ascend will have to stumble with one of their new products and/or one of their competitiors has a breakthrough that could put a dent into the ISP and Service Provider market.

Also, your analysis about Compaq and their technology partners may be indeed very close to the mark -- however, the missing piece of the puzzle is the introduction of very attractive applications like directory services that can generate new revenues for Service Providers (RBOCs) on very competitive platforms to the MAX. If this takes shape in '97, then we may indeed have some MAX killers on our hands.

But we shall see...
