Dear Professionals,

I have few questions to which I'd like some answers to. If my questions seem silly, please don't laugh. It may be sound silly to you, but to an inexperienced rookie like me, that may not be the case.
So here they are:

1. Let's say, due to some glitch in the software, my I happen to "have" stocks in my portfolio which I do not own. What would happen if I tried to sell these shares?

2. Let's suppose the trick worked and I have sold a certain number of shares which I do not own. How long would it take for my broker to run through my list of transactions and figure out there's something fishy going on here?

3. Suppose my broker does catch on to what I did and they call me up for questioning. And let's say I decide to play dumb. "I had no idea of this transaction. Honest!"
If this has happened, then am I in a DEEP DEEP trouble?
What are some of the possible consequences?

Thank you for your input.

Sincerely,
Robin
