NW..More server sales data. This time Sun is claiming to be out selling HWP and IBM but not all other competitors. Steve Bridge News New York--Jan 7--Sun Microsystems is outpacing nearly all its rivals, reaching the top of the computer industry, according to today's issue of BusinessWeek. * * * Sun's server sales have risen about 30% in 1998, compared to an 18% gain for servers made by HP and a 10% increase for those from IBM, according to sources cited by BusinessWeek. However, the article noted that Sun's last quarter could be a slight disappointment because the company changed over from a mainframe-based financial system to all-Sun gear, potentially delaying some orders. "If you want to know where the computer industry is going, ask Sun," said Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich to BusinessWeek magazine. BusinessWeek said the AOL deal, under which AOL promised to buy at least $500 million in Sun servers over the next three years, will also boost profits. End Bridge News Tel (212) 372-7288 |
