I know some people that brought suit against a large powerful corp. The corp. did not want to set precedent. But they could not take the chance of trial either because there was many people standing in line to follow suit.

So what they did was settle and seal the settlement. The people who were paid the settlement had to sign saying they would never disclose the terms of the settlement.

This way the corp set no precedent. They claimed no wrong doing. All of the disclosure was sealed also. So anyone who wanted to follow suit had to start from scratch.
