Amazon.com to open third distribution center
SEATTLE, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc . will open its third and largest distribution facility this year to speed deliveries to Western states and keep up with rapidly rising sales, the company said on Thursday.
The 323,000-square-foot center, described as a "highly mechanized" facility formerly used by Stanley Tools in Fernley, Nev., about 30 miles east of Reno, will open in the first half of 1999, the company said.
Amazon.com's original 93,000-square-foot distribution center in Seattle is at full capacity, and last year the company added a 202,000-square-foot center in New Castle, Del., mainly to serve the Eastern United States.
Company executives said the Nevada facility will reduce standard shipping times in the West by a full day, both because it will be able to stock more book and music titles and because it will be closer to major population centers.
The Nevada center will employ by more than 300 people by year's end, the company said.
Amazon.com, which began operations in July 1995, generated sales of $250 million in the fourth quarter through its online outlets, up from $66 million a year ago. In addition to books and music, the company sells videos, computer software and some consumer electronics and gift items
