Toshiba develops world's smallest DRAM chips-paper
TOKYO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp has developed the world's smallest DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip jointly with International Business Machines Corp (IBM) (NYSE:IBM - news) and Siemens AG (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: SIEG.F), a Japanese business daily reported on Friday.

Toshiba plans to mass-produce the DRAMs in Japan and in the United States from late 1999, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said.

A Toshiba spokesman said he could not immediately comment on the report.

The paper said Toshiba believed the new DRAMs would lower production costs by about 20 percent.

It also said Toshiba would start mass-producing the DRAMs at a domestic plant and at its joint venture plant with IBM in Virginia in late 1999.

Toshiba hopes to improve revenues at its memory division by switching to the new DRAMs, the paper said.
