[More G.Lite]

Universal ADSL Working Group cofounders Intel Corp., Compaq Computer Corp. and Dell Computer were conspicuous in their absence from DSLcon. DSP and test-equipment vendors at the show said they were not surprised to find that interest in splitterless ADSL as an immediate consumer market is waning among PC-centric companies as they discover that local copper loops are not characterized for line quality and that the splitterless ADSL standard still requires special filters at every analog phone in a house.

"G.lite really means reducing four to six service truck rolls necessary for DSL installation to one or two-not eliminating all truck rolls," said a developer at a modem-emulator company who asked not to be identified. "[But] no matter how tough it may be, the ILECs and CLECs have to roll this service out as quickly as possible or be eaten alive by cable modems."
