Zoltan! Just got in tonight and checked out the news. I noticed the same thing you did and rushed here to post the news to everyone and saw you beat me to it.

To reiterate for the benefit of the more extreme Clinton partisans:

Clinton's legal team has said that they would be willing to stipulate to everything in the Starr report, hearsay included, in exchange for the Senate agreeing not to call any witnesses. This means that they are terrified of what at least some of the potential witnesses might say. The White House hinted (rather broadly) that they would do whatever they could to make the Senate Republicans miserable, like they did the House Republicans, for wasting the people's time. Obviously, they didn't even take this threat seriously, or they wouldn't have been so willing to deal.

Hmmmm... Orrrr...

I'm thinking as I write this that Clinton's lawyers might already have a clause of the Starr report picked out that they intend to use to try to get what would essentially amount to a mistrial, or they might just already have their defense very carefully mapped out (you know, the proper use of the word "is" and suchlike) and can't abide the complications that additional testimony would introduce.

Either way, this early show of trepidation doesn't seem to bode well for the President. And implies some careful planning on the part of the the victimized White House, in contrast to the keystone cops scrambling of the "vast right-wing conspiracy."

If nothing else, I find all of this vastly entertaining.
