John, I've been using Etrade for about six months and have experienced several of the previously mentioned troubles. I totally agree that they have outstripped their capacity, that's why I just bought a small 1000 shares position in Etrade, they are growing like crazy. Did you notice Sun's new Starfire 10000 server with upto 64-250Mhz Sparc II processors, virtualized machines, 64 GB main memory and 2+TB of disk storage, they run about $850K for a starter machine. Now with one of these behind Etrade I think they could easily handle the traffic, and maintain some serious redundancy.

It's only a matter of time before they solve their scaling problems, and the best part is their growth rate in terms of sales, profit and subscribers. They also have a good brand name and are promoting themselves in all the right trade rags as well as the right websites.

Long term (1-2 years) I really like their prospects. Besides if one of the really big brokerages decides to wake up, they would make an excellent take over target to get an online trading division going real quick.
