Robin,

If you sold stock you dont own, you have shorted the stock. And you would need to buy it back, hopefully at lower price for a profit. If you are not familiar with short, check out the "motley fool" web site on shorting strategy. It is one of the commonly used trading strategies when one has a bearish opinion on a stock.

You should with your broker and ask them to verify what you have in your portfolio.
