Re: "I placed an order at 3:57. The order was never confirmed or canceled on the web site. When I called, the lady said that she didn't know but would call back.
She left me a voice mail message later that night, saying it was canceled. I logged on the next trading day morning, and lookie here, the order was filled. So nice of them to perform accurate trades."
August,
I had exactly the same experience in '98 with buying Dell at 3:58 or even 3:59, got a website confirmation it was cancelled. The next day it tanked and I was glad I didn't get it, I get to work and I have a message on the phone, guess what, it's a confirmation call from the Ameritrade tele broker, I bought Dell, say what???, they executed a day order from yesterday today? No turns out they just took 18 hours to give me a phone confirmation.
So I called and they said my order came in after the bell, then they said it came in and was bought at 3.58.40 and that's why the confirmation was late to me.
Well, how can you buy or sell a stock if you don't know how much cash you have left, if you don't know if you own the stock and they whole time they are giving me different answers to the question. When I brought the $ home to decide where to open a new account I asked my wife if I should just send it back to AMTD, she said after all the FACT telling (complaining to mfg rep), you've done, you can't be serious.
I was patient, I gave up though. No place is perfect but in my experience with E trade, ameritrade, schwab, accutrade, they are the worst.
