LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 1999--At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Pacific Microsonics announced today that its HDCD(R) decoding and HDCD precision filtering technology has been incorporated in two high performance Toshiba DVD -Video players, the SD3109 and SD5109.

"Pacific Microsonics is very pleased that Toshiba has added HDCD to these top quality DVD -Video players," said Bennet Goldberg, President of Pacific Microsonics. "These new Toshiba products are particularly exciting because DVD players are one of the fastest growing consumers electronics products ever introduced and Toshiba is clearly one of the industry's leaders in DVD ."

Toshiba's HDCD-equipped DVD players will provide consumers with a product that is both a high quality DVD -video player and a high quality HDCD audio CD player. Decoding HDCD CDs produces true 20-bit dynamic range and resolution from the 16-bit CD format and HDCD precision filtering significantly improves the sound quality of conventional CDs. With over 100 million HDCD CDs already sold, and over 2,000 different HDCD CDs available in music retail stores, many consumers purchasing these Toshiba DVD players will already own several HDCD CDs and can immediately enjoy the high fidelity sound quality produced by HDCD decoding.

"Adding HDCD audio capability to Toshiba's DVD players underscores our commitment to providing our customers with the highest quality DVD player in the industry," said Craig Eggers, Director of Product Planning, DVD , for Toshiba. "Consumers will also be pleased to see that these products are price competitive with other DVD players that do not offer the benefits of HDCD."

In addition to HDCD, both models feature additional leading edge audio and video technologies. For the ultimate in NTSC color fidelity, resolution and purity, the SD3109 is equipped with ColorStream Component Video outputs, an image enhancing feature first introduced to DVD products by Toshiba. The SD5109 is equipped with ColorStream Pro, progressive component video outputs. Connected to a compatible monitor, the progressively scanned DVD -video image is characterized by a highly filmlike appearance with no visible flicker or scanning line structure. The ColorStream Pro image is the essence of high quality DVD -video reproduction.

Additional audio features include built in Dolby Digital Surround decoding with six channels of D/A conversion, DTS compatible digital output, and Spatializer N-2-2 Virtual Surround Sound. Both models also include Toshiba's new Dual Disc twin tray system. This system permits the user to change the second disc in the twin tray without interrupting playback of the other disc.

The SD3109 will be available in March 1999 at a suggested retail price of $499, and the SD5109 will be available in May 1999 at a suggested retail price of $799.
