My understanding is Katmai will be available without RDRAM when it first comes out, and then near midyear Intel will introduce the Camino chipset which will support Katmai with Rambus memory. The interface for RDRAM is very different from SDRAM so, to smooth the transition they are making a special package that will let you plug SDRAM into RDRAM-enabled motherboards. They might have been thinking about RIMM (the name for the RDRAM package) shortages when they decided to do this. Investors in RMBS have heard numbers like 5% penetration of the DRAM market in '99, 20% in 2000 and 50% in 2001. (With the obvious condition that a better mousetrap doesn't come along first). I hope this account didn't mangle reality too bad...

I was hoping to wait for RDRAM to upgrade my computer, but it will be a while before prices come down and all the bugs are out so I'm starting to think about doing something now. I'd like to go the Celeron route but I just realized I'd need a case and power suply too, as I'm running socket 7 now. Does anybody think I'd be better off going with a super 7?

TIA
