Janice, unlike most of your posts, the one about the teacher with pink-eye and the poor substitute actually made me think of something serious and sad.

Children are cruel and merciless with substitutes!! When I was in eighth grade we had one in math class, and he was very jumpy and nervous, and not in very firm control of the class. Children are like vultures in their innate ability to sense weakness, and as we became more uproarious he became more timid and started cowering and trembling.

Someone threw a spitball at him, and he threw up his arms in a defensive position. This incited almost everyone to begin throwing whatever (not me; I was already sensitive and sympathetic to those in need), and he finally ended up under his desk, curled into the fetal position, sobbing if I remember correctly. The principal finally came and escorted him away, and we never saw him again. I had never seen anyone break down before, and I am still horrified whenever I think about it, and it seems vivid like it happened yesterday.

I bet you would have been up there with your high heels and silk underwear, stuffing him full of figs or something!!
