High-performance, 128-Channel Protocol

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 1999-- Siemens Microelectronics, Inc., today introduced the
MUNICH 128X (PEB20324H), a four-port, 128-channel version of its successful MUNICH 32 protocol controller
integrated circuit (IC) design. The new 128-channel chip was developed to meet growing market demand for lower cost,
higher port density, and greater flexibility in wide area networking (WAN) internetworking equipment.

The MUNICH 128X is a 128-channel WAN Protocol Controller that provides four independent 24/32-channel HDLC
Controllers in a single IC package, each with a dedicated 64-channel DMA Controller and a Serial PCM Interface
Controller. The device can support up to 128 full-duplex serial PCM channels. The chip performs Layer 2 HDLC
formatting/deformatting at data rates from 8 kbps to up to 2.048 Mbps or V.110/X30 protocols up to data rates of 38.4
kbps. The M128X also performs transparent transmission for DMI mode 0, 1, and 2. Processed data is transferred to host
memory using the PCI interface or demultiplexed bus interface. This makes the MUNICH 128X particularly well suited for
telecommunications and data communications applications, including routers, switches, access concentrators, Internet
access equipment, central D-channel controller for ISDN, frame relay and ATM gateways, CSU/DSUs, transmission
equipment, SDH/SONET add drop multiplexers, wireless base stations, and VPN equipment.

addition, the new MUNICH 128X is software-compatible with the MUNICH32, the most widely deployed WAN
protocol controller on the market, so developers can leverage their existing software designs to accommodate the higher
speed M128X IC.''

The M128X features an extremely low PCI bus load at less than 3 percent at full rate - the lowest PCI bus load of any
device on the market. Using low-power 3.3V technology, the part is 5V tolerant and comes in a 160-pin MQFP package.

-- 32 bit / 33 MHz PCI 2.1 interface

MUNICH 128X engineering samples are available immediately, and production quantities will be available later this
quarter. IC unit pricing has been set at under $62.35 each in 10,000 unit quantities.

CD-ROM containing PC Evaluation Software, Device Driver Software, a User Manual, Datasheet and Application Notes,
