Do you wonder what happened at dinnertime as the children told this story in their homes? Some would tell it as a big joke, some as an incident that frightened them, some with sadness in their voices, but all, I truly believe this, all would tell it with a question mark at the end. They needed to hear from their parents what this meant, and if what they felt was normal, and if what happened was right. And how many fathers laughed and said what a wimp this guy was? How many took the time to talk about compassion and vulnerability and sensitivity? Do you think they nurtured any of the gentler feelings or just reinforced the concept that the weak deserve by their very weakness to be bullied and destroyed? What a sad and terrible memory, CGB!
