concerning Marcomedia and his Top Ten Things to Happen in
1999.

"No. 8: Macromedia challenges Microsoft in Web tools market

Was it really only a year ago that Macromedia was practically counted out of the Web tools market? Was it true that the company that dominated the multimedia market almost missed the boat on the Web?

What a difference a year makes.

Continuing a trend the company started in 1998, Macromedia is about to become a major, perhaps even dominant, player in the Web tools market. Why? Two key reasons:

A comprehensive line-up of Web tools, including Dreamweaver for HTML and DHTML production, Flash and Shockwave for online animation, and an increasingly Web savvy Director for high-end multimedia. And now the company is beginning to dabble on the server side with Generator.

Overall quality. The quality is there. This year we gave product awards to Dreamweaver and Flash, which also garnered our coveted Product of the Year award. Fireworks, meanwhile, earned runner-up recognition.

As it brings these tools closer together into an integrated suite of solutions, Macromedia has the potential to create a much-needed, end-to-end solution for Web builders. By year's end, Macromedia could be the newest headache facing Microsoft in a market the Redmond folks thought they owned."
