I spent a lot of time in India years ago. Their paper money is like monopoly money - sometimes you'd even get a stack of 100 rupee notes stapled together like bus transfers. And then god help you if you had a little rip in a note - nobody would take it and you'd have to line up in a bank to get it exchanged.

A woman's jewellry is actually like a kind of like an insurance policy there. If your husband dies its often the only thing keeping you and your family from poverty and starvation.
