New Jersey is only about 8,000 square miles in area, Germany is about 138,000 square miles, just a little smaller than California (159,000). France is 213,000 sq. mi. (or 553,000 sq. km if you prefer!), almost as big as Texas (267,000). I think if you compared the whole of Europe outside Russia to the continental U.S. they would be pretty comparable in size. Sorry to reply late, obviously I'm a few hundred posts behind on the thread. Another fun fact about New Jersey (where I lived for six years in grad school) is that its population density is almost twice that of India! ==John
