Am told this week's issue of AVIATION WEEK & SPACE TECHNOLOGY has an article on Iridium. Headlines at: aviationweek.com IRIDIUM next generation ("IRIDIUM NEXT") is said to have optical inter-satellite links instead of microwave, and transmission capability of 256 kbps, or over 100 times the current rate. I'm sorry I can't put the article here, but apparently you need to subscribe to get in.
