good post. i would think that standalone retail chips (for upgrade purposes) make up a tiny, tiny percentage of intel's cpu sales. it really is a very small market that will swap the chips in their pc's. it certainly isn't any of the people who bought pc's this holiday season to "get on the information superhighway." (ugh! what an awful term!) i doubt it's the corporate customers either -- don't think many mis people want to spend a weekend swapping a thousand chips. i would bet the major part goes to small var's who do this service for their customers. heck, even i would feel a little uncomfortable swapping cpu's, and i've built several pc's from scratch (back in the good ole days, when there was a bit of heroism to that sort of thing)...

does anyone have a solid number on what % of intc cpu's are sold standalone to end-users?
