RH,

Interesting that you should mention Atlas Shrugged. As I was up early today thinking about the implications and appropriate preparations for Y2k, that title passed through my mind. But it came through as Geeks Shrugged.

As it has evolved to describe programmers, I have always thought the term "Geeks" too disrespectful of a class of thinkers that I deeply admire, for in the service economy, they have become the facilitators of production.

If the programmers shrug off Y2K remediation, because it is too vast, or time is too short [356 days], or because they feel woefully underappreciated/underpaid for supporting the weight of this new world on their shoulders...then the Millennium time bomb WILL explode, and even with our gold we'll face extreme difficulty with a side order of misery.
