Tech stocks generally were strong amid optimistic talk about sales of personal
computers in the fourth quarter and in 1999. The talk had been that PC sales
could rise 12%-15% this year. The new view: 17%-19% growth. Compaq
Computer benefited from these rising expectations; its stock jumped 3 3/8 to
45 3/8 . The official Wall Street estimates are that Compaq could earn about
$1.77 this year but the whisper number is $2.
