Have they truly acknowledged this? Can you provide a cite, please?

As I said earlier, selling products at less than cost can be profitable if you cover the difference with ad sales on your high volume website.

Then there's the Microsoft earnings expectation minimization model of consistently surprising Wall Street positively by repeating how challenging the business outlook is. Also helps PR if you are a monopoly (which is not the case for Amazon, at least not yet.)
