<I think Borders could do alot to improve service>
Sam,
Agreed, I forgot about that. The first thing they need to do is get the staff away from the PC's doing book searches. They already double-up on handling inventory and stacking. There's no reason why an Amazon-like in-store service cannot handle both in-house and cross-chain searching. When I go to Border's, I frequently don't know just what I want, and the more I look, the more I find things I hadn't thought of. Put the search tools at-hand and let the staff roam, which is what they're best at (they are wasted when they just sit behind tubes); of course books need to be stacked, but I think you get the idea.
Your comment about Sony makes sense, too. I'd like to see how the Amazon investors feel about this, but that folder's all focussed on the unbelievable run-up on the stock price.
Dave
