I am a Customer

I was a beta tester for CAI Wireless internet service in the Boston area. They had to come out to my house to measure signal levels and to position the antenna for optimum performance. They used a well equipped truck with a deployable antenna mast. They found a good spot. Then, they went up on my roof and installed the antenna with associated coax and so forth. This impressed me as a very expensive setup operation.

The service was fine for quite some time. Then, they switched me to another vendor in NYC, Datachron, Inc. This past fall the service got worse and worse. Even calling Datachron was a chore. Now, it is impossible. And, CAI Wireless is no longer in the phone book here in Boston. I sent a email message to an address on the Datachron homepage (that was still working). I got a response from a guy that doesn't work there anymore. He said that the company (Datachron) was out of business. Given that they were out of business, the service was better than expected! I am still sort of connected.

My take on all this: 1) When it works, it is fine. 2) They have to charge $300-$500 for installation or sell long term connection packages to make money. 3) They must connect both way via RF. (Right now, it is upload by phone, download by RF). 4) They need to reengineer their connection(s) to the internet backbone. (Right now, there are too many hops).
