Chuzzlewit they are investing in supply chain software and new distribution infrastructure just like Dell. Thats where the 40million / year goes - not to developing a webpage. They have hired a bunch of former walmart executives to run their entry into mass retailing. You can see some tidbits of this because now they are selling gifts (cameras etc) in addition to books and CDs. The fact that this possibility exists - that Amzn could become the next major retailer - is the reason the stock is so high. I agree it is too high, btw. As an individual investor, its hard to know what the future plans of some mgmt team is, but the institutions are privy to this info. I will say that if amzn gets their entire system up and running and starts selling, say, appliances there will be no way any standard retailer will be able to match their price or profitability. And, the fact that amzn will be competing against the other retail outlets as opposed to Dell vs. Cpq (which is another high tech company at least) is another thing in their favor. Id like to see Home Depot or Walmart implement the Dell model - no way.

Just trying to shed some light on this amzn phenomenon. At these levels Im not buying it either, and I have no idea when it will be profitable.
