Have you had the computer long? How full is the hard-drive? Has it ever been defragmented?

To see how much space you have left, go to your desktop and open My Computer. Right click on C: and click on properties. That will show you total drive capacity and space available. It is possible that by emptying your history folder you simply made enough room for your swap-file to function.
