A FURBY TALE

While on vacation between Christmas and New Year, I came upon
a shop on the main street of the local town with a handwritten sign
in the window, proclaiming ‘FURBYS ON SALE HERE NOW!'. Seeing no
long line and having had no luck with buying one prior to Christmas,
I entered in disbelief. Once inside the shop, about the size
of the typical living room, there were no customers to be seen and,
looking around, the shop seemed to be selling mainly magazines,
newspapers, candy etc, but no sign of Furby. My gaze then met the
shopkeeper's and I asked about the sign in the window. Saying nothing
he turned and nodded to his assistant at the other end of the
shop-counter who reached below the counter and carefully placed an
all-black Furby on the counter top - the first live Furby I had ever
seen ! It proceeded into a little ‘song and dance' act while I asked
the shopkeeper how long he had been selling them. He said he had
been unable to obtain any before Christmas but had just recently
obtained ‘a small consignment'. The price ? $85.
While on vacation I read almost daily stories of the
$1000 Furby...problems encountered by people with the surname
Furby...interviews with stressed-out parents waiting in the pre-dawn
outside of stores where they were expected to go on sale...even a
major robbery of a large haul of Furbys though this was an
‘unconfirmed report'.
