China's Gold Industry Lifts Profit 47 Percent in 1998

BEIJING, Jan 8 (AFP) - China's gold industry boosted profit 47 percent from a year earlier to one billion yuan (120 million dollars) in 1998, official media reported Saturday.

Total gold production reached 172.8 tonnes last year, the China Daily quoted Gold Bureau director Wang Dexue as saying.

"The gold industry will make every effort to produce 175 tonnes of gold and earn a profit of 1.2 billion yuan (140 million dollars) this year," Wang said.

China cut its domestic gold prices last year to bring them in line with the international market, cutting industry profits by more than one billion yuan (120 million dollars).

The industry had tried to improve management and cut production costs in order to make up the shortfall, the paper said.
