Regarding connections: I have cable internet courtesy of Time Warner and it is probably one of the best deals in the world today, internet or otherwise, but I am aware I'm a small minority that this is available to. Connection is VERY important if you want to trade seriously. For just a few trades a month it probably doesn't matter too much. You could probably sneak by with a very good 56K connection on the right backbone. Rick Faurot, of the MB thread, went through many tortures before discovering that a 56K UUNET connection to MB Trading solved a lot of problems. He does about three round-trip trades per day.

Satellite may be an alternative. It's kinda pricey, and like Sean says it's only one way, but upstream is not that crucial. I've also heard that there is a delay in the quotes, although I don't know this for sure. Call around to your phone company and all the local ISP's to see what's available in hi-speed service. I only found out by inquiring that a local ISP in my area offers downstream wireless for $50/mo. Fixed wireless is extremely high throughput. So you have to check around.
