Art,
If you can recall the S&P and DJ broke their 200 day average's last summer and shortly after they bounced back. I have read many TA books and I don't have one of them recommending trading on a 200 day moving average. Although some of them use it to judge the strength of a trend I don't recall any of them recommending actually buying or selling based on that moving average. I have included here an optimization of a simple trading system based on moving averages.

Note that the 200 day average lost more money than the 50 day Average made. If I run this on another stock I would get a completly different result. This is based on a fairly reasonable commission of $80 per 100 shares and trades 100 shares at a time. Starts in July of 86.

Compare this to a system I use which I have not optimized. This system uses some moving averages but puts more weight on overbought/oversold indications. Same commission, number of shares, and time frame.

Also to quote Tom Demark from his book. "My experience sugggests that the results achieved from using traditional moving averages are no better than those realized by using most other conventional trend following approaches.
