NICS - The netgear cards are cheap and work well. They even supply their own drivers... just remember to copy the supplied 'tulip.c' file into your source tree before compiling the kernel. (310TX - 100/10Mbps)

I thought that RH does all installation automatically. At least for standard components. Thanks for the telling me.

Modem - avoid WinModems or any modem that says 'Made for Window95

It might be a problem. My favorite name brand is USR, but I was told that they come now P'n'P only and can't be used for Linux. Any suggestions? 33.6 speed is enough. Anyway the local phone co. will be rolling out xDSL soon.

HD - anything.

I'll probably go with WD. We have several of them in the family and non of them ever failed . The oldest one is 6 ye old. Most of the drives advertised as UDMA. Whatever it is, can they be used for Linux?

Any specific periphirals you were looking at?

Not much for now as I am planning to keep my printer and the scanner on my Win machine for now. All my data files are there.
My major concern is MB. We had several Asus MB's in the family. I had no problem with them. Lately many deallers are selling Microstar. Are they any good? Any particular model? Which features do I need and which ones better to avoid? I guess, I'd better to avoid anything AGP related for now. How many slots and of what type? 100MH or 66MH bus, etc?

TIA
