There's no way to know exactly what happened. There is constant chatter on boards such as this one, and companies rarely step in. Was his timing "sinister." Who knows. I sent him an email on Jan 3rd asking him to respond to the issues on the board, and perhaps that is what got him to "show himself." We can guess all we want, but won't come to any true conclusion.
What I do know is that their business plan appears to make good sense. There will be high barriers to entry for copycat followers (e.g., reputation/relationships with auction houses, ownership of auction facilities and magazine, management experience in industry) and my understanding is that this is a relatively high margin business (unlike that of an internet star we are all familiar with). What I can't prove, to myself or others, is whether or not all they state in the business plan is true. At this point, unless someone has some direct contacts within the company, this is all conjecture.
If things work out, terrific. I'm in on the ground floor of a company which will be FUN and profitable to follow. If not, I've thrown away a bit of money, learned a few lessons, read a set of internet postings more thought provoking and exciting than most mystery novels, and will move on. My gut feel, however, is very positive.
Time will tell..................
