Wily,

There is no technical reason for Slot 1 versus PGA. The reasons you site are false. The purpose for Slot 1 and integrated L2 is striclty marketing and revenue $$$. SSRAM for L2 cache is expensive and it benefits Intel if every system house have to buy the Cache from them because its included on the Slot 1 Processor. There are technical advantages involving special substrates and Multi Chip Modules but Slot 1 is not 1 of them. Its all a matter of intels master plan which is too starting sucking in other functionality from PC's. IE. MMX Cpu's, Embedded L2 Cache, Custom Rambus Dram, NIC's, Graphics Accellerators, System Controller Chip sets, MOBO's etc...
