Excellent points there Mark. We have to keep in mind that the concept of money is to be a store of value and a means to facilitate trade efficiently (for us). If it is not working to serve those purposes, it is not succeeding. In an inflationary environment we are subjected to some invisible taxation as the only one who gets full value is the one who prints the money. And of course we need to consider the inpact of sales taxes and value added taxes. They do not help the efficient exchange of goods and services.
The banks want in on the action as well. If you keep your money in a checking account and use the plastic either you or the seller or both will be taxed on each transaction by the bank. And the nice thing for the Bank is that the money never really leaves their hands. In fact they may have it lent out many times over and be collecting the spread each time along with a service charge for each and every transaction along the way.
And with further growing concerns about the ability to monitor every transaction that occurs on the plastic, or perhaps not, with the Y2K bug, I can certainly appreciate the growing demand for Gold coins.
They have stood the test of time, thousands of years, and all over the world are recognized as currency. They leave no tracks. And everyone will want the coins with the year 2000 stamped on. They will always have extra value as collectors items.
