Cable modems: reply and question Glad this has worked out so well for you, wily. Enjoyed your post. Here in Spokane, TCI is just ramping up. the WSJ says we're the first community where you buy your own cable modem, which is based on a just completed standard called DMX or some such. The first brand, which just came off the line, is a 3com which runs about $300. But do it yourself installation is essentially free and service thereafter runs just $34.95. I can't get it just yet (using DSL through USWest, and generally quite pleased tho I pay more), but my dad can, and I'm looking forward to getting him hooked up and seeing how it works for him. A question: can you (or other cable modem users) dynamically connect more than one machine to your cable modem via an ethernet hub? I can't seem to get a clear answer on this. This was a very happy unexpected benefit of using US West as an ISP with my DSL hookup. Interesting how they managed to supposedly avoid the congestion problems which have been characterized as endemic to cable modem technology. I would be interested to hear more from anyone with info or URLs.
